Don’t Waste Your Hurricane

Psalm 29:3–4 says, “The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.”

For the next couple of days, all eyes in Florida will be locked onto the path of Hurricane Milton, nervously tracking every update. After seeing what Hurricane Helene did, it’s understandable that we’d feel anxious. But while these storms demand our attention and preparation, they also give us a chance to live out our trust in God and show His love to others. Martin Luther once said, “God doesn’t need your good works, but your neighbor does.” So maybe while we’re thinking about securing our homes and protecting our families, we should also ask ourselves, “How can I show the love of Jesus to the people around me?”

This storm could be an opportunity to serve our neighbors and live out our faith in ways we might not have considered before. How can we trust God in the storm and proclaim His grace to those who don’t yet know Him?

Deepen in Worship & Awe

Hurricanes are a reminder of just a glimpse of God’s immense power. If these storms are so mighty, how much more should we stand in awe of the God who commands them? Even now, His power is held back.

Take time to meditate on scripture—Psalms 29, 46, and 121 are good places to start.

In the chaos, find your refuge in the Lord, for both your heart and your mind.

Depend Upon God

Take care of your family, your church, and your neighbors. Who around you might need some help? How can you check in with others before or after the storm hits? God has given us resources, and we should protect them while keeping our hearts focused on the welfare of others.

Display the Gospel

This might be the best chance you’ll have to get to know the people living right next to you. If the power goes out and the meat in your freezer starts thawing, invite your neighbors over for a meal instead of letting it go to waste. Work together to clean up, share resources, and be a light to people who need to see Christ in action.

Declare the Gospel

Finally, tell your neighbors about the Savior who holds the storms in His hands. He saved you from the storm of sin and God’s just wrath. Our only refuge is in Him, the One who commands the wind and the waves. Let your neighbors know that they can find refuge in Christ as well.

So Refuge Church, don’t let this hurricane go to waste. Show your neighbors where true refuge is found— let’s help our community find refuge in Christ!
